PLANTS

From January to July, I committed to drawing a plant every single day. I was inspired, in part, by Ellsworth Kelly’s plant drawings.

I ended up with an entire notebook of 177 drawings. The practice was incredibly meditative; a few minutes a day where I was entirely present and paying attention.

Three rules I followed:

  1. I had to be outside when I draw these plants (gets me out the house)

  2. 5 minutes max (so I don’t get too precious)

  3. I drew with pen (so I can’t overthink or start over)

Some drawings came out great, some came out awful, but success was just doing a little bit every day. The drawings—and I—got more confident the deeper into the practice I got. Slowly, I figured out the way I liked to draw.
